Spent the afternoon getting some things together ready for the WECU Congress, due to be held at the Royal Beacon Hotel, on the seafront; pairing boards, some spare pairing cards, table numbers etc. but never gave wall charts a thought.
Went down c. 4.30 p.m. to find all the tables already set out, and nothing to stop us getting stuck in straight away - a really good start. Ewart & Pearl Smith were already there, Andrew Footner, the Congress Secretary arrived shortly after. Just as the table cloths were put in place, the Constables arrived with all the equipment – sets, boards and clocks – perfect timing. Fortunately, they’d got wall charts on board, so this was the smoothest set-up ever, everything being in place and ready to go by 6 p.m.
The only fly in the ointment was learning that the Constables were thinking of not doing this event in future, unless business picked up considerably this year. The venue is very comfortable and eminently suitable in every way, except its player limit of 100, which makes it difficult for them to reach their break-even point, let alone make a profit on the weekend. Needs some thought.
