Got down there at 09.00 if only to make sure of a parking place near the hotel, as it was blowing a gale and raining hard.
Folk started arriving shortly after, many familar faces, but also a contingent of 7 Dutchmen to give this westcountry affair a continental flavour. Unfortunately, Andrew, the Entry Secretary, only knew about 6 of them – the other claimed to have sent an e-mail (not received) and had no ECF nor FIDE grade. This was the first of several last minute panics, quite usual; mostly people who claimed ot have paid but for whom no trace could be found immediately. But these were quickly sorted, and just before 10.00 Andrew was able to call for everyone to take their places ready for the announcements and start of play, only to find 2 of the pairing boards had not been completed or displayed, so few could respond to his request. This sorted itself quickly and the show was on the road within minutes.
