Paignton Congress 2015 Day 5

Keith Arkell has an added incentive to finish on 7/7 pts, not only to be clear 1st, but also to keep his rating points up, after losing a few at his previous tournament at Coulsdon. Today he was paired with his own pupil, 13 yr old Theo Slade, which might favour one side or the other, – but which one? Each will be familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the other. As things turned out, the maestro was not to be denied, and cruised to 5/5. Slade will certainly be disappointed and still has a good chance of a very good final score.

On the other boards, local star, Alan Brusey, seems to have hit a fine vein of form, and looks set to post an impressive final total.

Master & pupil play for real.

John Wheeler vs Alan Brusey on Bd. 2 after a good start by both.

Devon's Match Captain, Brian Hewson, takes on 2nd seed, Steve Berry.

Bolt vs Pickersgill on Bd. 7 with Hempson vs Staples.

"3 little girls from school are we" (G & S). Marian Cox, Wendy Carr & Hazel Welch, side by side in the Minor.

The Analysis Room - A room with a view. Looking out over the hotel pool towards Brixham & Berry Head.
